Bruce Foxton used to get slagged off by a few people (mainly because nobody thought he was a proper mod) but he was very good on occasion...

Lee Sklar played in a rhythm section with Billy Cobham, its just astonishing playing

I'd like to add Jim Smith from Cardiacs.
Fiendishly complex bass parts that bear little or no relation to the guitar parts and he did it effortlessly.
Saw them a lot and cannot remember him ever playing a bum note.
Also played in a band with Cardiacs' drummer and Jim could do it while legless too. I had to be sober when playing live usually.
